With so many potential variables in tiling, there are many questions we regularly get asked. Here are some answers to common questions.
What do I use to set tiles on wood? We recommend you use flexset for setting tile on wooden surfaces, as it allows for the limited range of movement expected as the wood swells and shrinks due to humidity.
How many square feet can a 50lb bag of thinset cover? If the surface is properly levelled, you can expect to get 35-40 square feet of coverage from a 50 lb bag of thinset.
What should I use to set tiles in pools? We recommend you use a mix of Wallmix Thinset 763, replacing the water normally used in the mix with Southcrete 30 Admix S.G.M.
Should I use grout in pool tile? Absolutely, but you should ensure that the grout used is suitable for pool use, such as S.G.M. wet set grout.
I have seen grout in 25lb bags; how many square feet will this cover? A 25lb bag of grout will be sufficient for approximately 150-200 square feet of tiled surface, depending upon the width of the grout joint.
What's the best way for me to maintain my installed tiles? For normal cleaning a non-abrasive household detergent is perfect. For tougher cleaning jobs we offer Fila Deterdek and Fila Cleaner. Construction residue can be removed using Fila pH Zero.
I'm thinking about tiling my bathroom. What are the steps I should take? The first thing you may want to do is learn more about ceramic tile, which we hope you did by looking around our website! Although this isn't essential, it will help you be more knowledgeable about your selection. The next step is to take a long, hard look at the room (or rooms) you want to tile. Note the characteristics. What design theme do you wish to carry out? Colour... application...these are just a couple of the things you need to take into consideration. It's at this point you may want to talk to a contractor or interior designer, or alternatively you may just decide to just jump in with both feet and do-it-yourself. Rafmon will be pleased to assist you, either way. From there, you need to get an idea of how much ceramic tile you're going to need, which you can do using our on-line tile calculator.. Once you do all your homework, you're ready to go tile shopping!
Upon what should I base my buying decision? Quality? Durability? Warranty? Color? Texture? All of these factors should be taken into account in deciding which tiles to choose.
From a design standpoint, is there a certain size, color or pattern of tile that makes a room appear larger or smaller? In the past, the majority of installations were small tiles for small areas and large tiles for large areas. Today, tradition is surpassed by innovation. There are modular sizes used in every room, large or small, and many of these sizes are often used together to create a more dramatic look. Also, a large, light colored tile can make a small room appear larger. As for the floor pattern, it is entirely your preference.
